Event Report
It's been a good year. Twelve months ago the Games Day organizers and I--Scott Alan Woodard, Fen Yan, and Dave Arnott--were planning our first event, struggling to find a location and crossing our fingers that people would show up. Now we've had five of these quarterly Games Days :-), and the last was our biggest yet. There are 42 names listed up above, but total turnout was more like 50 (not everyone signed in).

Jeremy Willis had contacted me after Games Day 4 to ask if we could host his Car Wars group's two-round tournament. We were concerned about the limited table space, but Jeremy said they could get by on a single long table and it worked out fine. Turnout among our usual crowd was the highest ever, and when you add the ten or so Car Wars players we really filled the room.So much, in fact, that we're really trying to find a new location for Games Day 6. Some place with more room, more tables, longer hours, and better air circulation. Some place like that probably won't be free, though. We're working on it.

The door prizes continued their gradual increase in both quantity and quality. As they have all year, Boulder Games donated gift certificates to the drawing.

Besides the games on the prize table, Scott worked hard to arrange enough table space to properly display the games everyone brought to play, rather than leaving them in various bins and cardboard boxes. Besides looking great, I know it helped the day's activities, as I watched various gamers wander over the games tables between games, figuring out what to play next. Nice work, Scott!

Be sure to check out the following "session report" sort of messages from the following folks on the SoCal-Boardgamers mailing list.

One last photo of the Burbank Petco? The Community Center has served us well all year, but I believe we've now outgrown this convenient and free location.

I used some panorama software to stitch together this pic from four photos. It doesn't do justice to the Car Wars crowd way in back, but at least it shows off our game tables well.

The first game of the day was Warhamster Rally, played by Russell, Mike M., Joe, Paul, and Debby

And the second game, Princes of Florence. That's Jon, Scott (demonstrating the mandatory gamer pose, pointing at the board), Alan (also helping with the pose), and Mark J. (me!) is the missing fourth player.

Newcomer Kevin (center) joins old Games Day pros Eric and Dave.

The Car Wars den. I'm sorry that I don't know all of the names, but I know there's Bob with his back to the camera, organizer Jeremy with the white shirt on the right, and Aaron standing next to him.

More Car Wars action. Well, I think the action hasn't quite started, since the cars (Micro Machine scale) are in their starting positions around the edge of the table, and the drivers have their stat sheets on clipboards.

periCrokinole was a popular game throughout the day. Here's my partner Dick Danger caught in the unfortunate act of having to remove one of our pieces that was knocked to the perimeter line.

The same game from another angle. That's Glenn (Dick Danger), Jon, Mark, and Alan.

Here's Volldampf played by Paul, Mike M., Dave, Debby, and Russell.

It's Lord of the Rings, played by Jeff, Eric, Joe, and Evan.

Mike M., Alan, Scott, and Dave finally get to play Who Stole Ed's Pants?

Neal, Evan, Jeff, and Joe play struggle for survival in Evo.

It's a golden oldie, Win,Place, or Show with Kevin, Eric, Kasia, Robert, and Roger.

One of the prettiest games played, Silberzwerg, played by Debby, Zoe, Russell, and Paul.

Chris, Dennis, Mike K., Dave, and Mark K. shoot 'em up in Wyatt Earp. (Hmm, maybe Chris is just watching.)

Here's the Car Wars arena at ground level. When I checked in here, the van was killed, while that sporty yellowish car was zipping around (and responsible for the burning oil, too). Not sure about the double-canopied number on the right, but I think that's the coolest car out there. :-)

We were thankful for all the extra tables brought by Games Day attendees (I think this one was Robert's). But yowza, that tablecloth! :-) Struggling to play Taj Mahal through the color clash are Max, Bob, Alan, Scott, and Mike M.

Watch out! Looks like Roger is trying some Vulcan mind trick to affect the outcome of his Dragon's Gold game with Eric, Kasia, and Robert.

Hey, we had a little cross-pollination between the boardgamers and Car Wars crowd when Aaron (left) joined in this game of Bohnanza with Neal, Joe, Mark K., Jeff, and Eva.

How cool is this?! It's NASCAR Champions with Hot Wheels cars & track!

Mike K., Alan, Jon, and Scott walk the tightrope playing Drahtseilakt.

Cool bits! It's Risk 2210 with Alexr, Garrett, and Nick. That's Sue playing Carcassonne at the other end of the table with Rich.

Cool bits up close. :-)

Okay, that wall painting on the left is clearly a fish, but we're still stumped about that other one. Dog? Pig? Mutant? Oh yeah, the game in the foreground is La Citta, played by Neil, Russell (hidden), Dave, Mark J., and Roger.

There it is again! The gamers are Max, Bob, Zoe, and Patricia playing the party game Perpetual Notion.

Ivanhoe, played by Robert, Eric, Kasia, Mike K., and Mark K.

Rich and Sue set up Through The Desert.

One new Essen game made it to Games Day, thanks to quick service from Boulder Games. It's Urland, played by Mike M., Fen, Alan, Jon, and I think Scott (taking the photo).

Chill:Black Morn Manor, with Paul, Kasia, Mike K., Eric, and Robert.

Bob teaches Und Tschuss! to Max, Zoe, Patricia, Alexander, and Nick.

Jon and Fen square off in what might be the most-popular finger-flicking game, at least in Europe, Subbuteo. Hey, Fen, did you know your opponent was the 1994 US National Champion?! :-)

One last game of Crokinole, perhaps the most-played finger-flicking game on our continent. :-)
