What was played
Our biggest and best Games Day ever! The Petco community centers we've used for the previous six SoCal Games Days were a fantastic start, and I'm still impressed that the corporation demonstrates their commitment to local communities through the free use of these rooms. However, the truth is that we'd outgrown the location as early as Games Day 4. Finding a better location proved to be difficult, though, and it wasn't until recently that Patricia Rigby hooked us up with the Cal-Fed bank in Montrose (near Glendale). This proved to be a huge improvement in so many ways: the space, the tables & chairs, the hours, the temperature... Just super!
Which isn't to say it was so cavernous you could hear an echo in there. With another 25% increase in gamer turnout (to almost 60), we filled up that larger room almost from the get-go. Hmm, that's got us thinking about the future, but nothing is decided quite yet. We're getting some feedback on the SoCal-Boardgamers mailing list, and that's where we'll be making some eventual announcements about the future of SoCal Games Days. Don't worry--there will definitely be a Games Day 8 (and more)!!
What I love most about Games Days is the cross-pollination that takes place. Some attendees are just individuals without a regular game group, but a lot already have a collection of gamers they play with regularly. At Games Day some of those groups still play mostly together (which is certainly okay!), while others mix it up. I play with a group at work, a group in my own town, and a group in a neighboring town at various times. In the pictures below I see gamers from all three of those groups playing with each other, and I know I played with a few new faces, too. That's just cool.

Here around back is where we get into the basement community room. Kind of hard to spot here, the door is just past the blue SUV. During GD7 we had a sign indicating the way.

Here's how the Games Day room (half of it, anyway) looked before the fesitivities started. This is actually a photo from the scouting trip Scott, Davem and I took in late March.

Is it me or do my Poor Man's panorama shots keep getting weirder. Ah well, sorry for the distortion, but this sort of shows GD7 in full swing. Sign-in table at the immediate left, beyond that the game-stacking tables. Lots of other tables where games are being played, and our new banner on the far wall. Bonus points for finding the "clones" in the picture. :-)

How it looked before the full swing. This is at the opening bell, or thereabouts.

Early action looking the other way. As I recall those guys are playing Carcassonne with the new expansion (the one with the Big Meeple.)

Mike Mayer, Al, Dennis, Russell, and Aaron struggle for Hong Kong signage in Filthy Rich.

Not a great pic from my little camera, but check these out! These are handmade Warhamsters! Debby Estes made them for Joe Neelon--they played the game together at Games Day 5. I should've included something for scale--they're about a half-inch long apiece.

Jon takes on the father-son Schlickbernds (Todd and Bruce) in his Table Hockeygame. This was a popular game that several played with throughout the day.

Close shot of the Table Hockey board. Smoooooth...

Ted, Chris W., Jennifer, and Mark S. play Puerto Rico, one of many times this new favorite was played at GD7.

Welcome to Games Day! And welcome to our first ever tournament, Medici. These are the three first-round games. Eventual winner Mike Mayer is stitting right under the sign's exclamation point.

You can't quite read it in this pic, but those dark green caps are all embroidered with the name of their game group, the Westside Spielers. That's Debby (of the homemade warhamsters) in the foreground, followed by Eric, Paul, Karin, and John. They're playing Funkenschlag.

Ah, the Medici finals! Eventual winner Mike Mayer's head is first on the left, followed by Al, Scott, Dave A., Ryan, and Dave B.

Another crowd-pleasin' game, Hamsterrolle. Mike Meckler reaches out while Jon watches.

Bruce, Russel, and Mark S. gave the new game Piratenbuch a try.

Amidst the flood of German games there was one miniatures wargame, Warhamster. Al is challenging Dennis with Dennis' own armies!

Mike Meckler, ??, Mike Mayer, and others navigate the Nile in the odd game Cairo.

Shades of GD6! It's another epic Starfarers of Catan game played by Mark S., Jeff, Joe, Evan, and Roger.

Way back at GD2, DaveO (right) was about the only gamer driving up from Orange County. Now he's been convincing more in the area to make the trek north for Games Days. Here's he's joined by Chris P., Dave B., and JW in another game of Puerto Rico.

Chris W., Rick, Karin, and Sue are playing Die Magier von Pangea.

Russell, Dave A., Carl, and Jon tame the Wild West in Wyatt Earp.

Robert and Bob P. play the Knizia 2-player modern classic, Lost Cities.

The good-looking game Das Amulett, here played by Jonathan, Winton, Chris C., Jen, and Ryan.

Those Westside Spielers are flocking together, now trying Hick Hack Im GackelWack.

The father-son team Jon and Carl Schultz took second place in the Spades tournament.

It's the Prize Table drawing! I'm calling out the winners that Dave A. picks, traditionally using a 6 Nimmt! deck to choose random numbers. :-)

All eyes turned toward the Prize Table.

Brian displays his Prize Table pick.

Here's DaveO, Chris P., Dave B., and JW again, this time playing an obscure little game, Ciao! Ciao!

Another go at Cairo, another game by those Westside Spielers. First time to see Debby's face, though. :-)

Jon, Mike Mayer, Zoe, and Dave A. are playing Katzenjammer Blues (which happens to have been Dave's prize table pick from GD6!). Beyond is our attempt at a separate trade table, which wasn't much of a success.

Yes, occasionally good ol' Settlers of Catan is still played! Here's a 5-player setup with Brian, Sheldon, Karin, Mark K., and Roger.

Half of the Crokinole tournament (two more boards were in play).

In the foreground is the Crokinole final. Jon is about to take his shot. He and Dennis managed to beat DaveO and JW.

A late night game for the brain-fried. It's Klondike! Ryan, Nick, Dave A., and I play while Max watches.
